This is our portfolio review by Brady Webb's assistant editor Sam. We usually attend yearly to have portfolio's reviewed by Brady but he was unable to attend this year's MCM. With them being anthropomorphic animals I really like how you’ve got the proportions and shapes right. They’re nice good chunky drawings. Colour work is really good aswell. Ohh the Duckbill Platypus is the best thing ever. Theres a good sense of humour to it as well which is really awesome. Maybe the bigger eyes, your stuff is better with a structured face. You’re working to your skills and talents, so when its grittier its got a very stylized look thats awesome so maybe work on the cartoony element a bit more. The intricacies of the detail is really cool. That might be difficult to keep up when doing different angles and pages, but for the profiles it really helps them pop off the page. I also love how you’ve appropriated human costume for animals is just done, very smartly done. Maybe the proportions on this guy (Brig the badger) are a little off, the muscle a little high up his arm. For the most part these are all beautiful, especially the work on the feathers as well.
All I can say about the female form is that they’re a little bit off in the proportions with this lady (Kunjana) and this one at the end (Wirring.) But honestly for the most part its all really good, you guys are working to your strengths which I would say is the most important thing. .
Us: We come from a film background so when we work on pages we write the script then storyboard it and these are the storyboard stage, is that a good way to work?
S: I would argue so yeah. Having studied film myself it definitely lends it that cinematic feel. I don’t know if you guys have read Saga? The way Fiona Staples lays it out like a film book so i
not a million miles from this.
101 for modern stuff is the New 52 Batwoman run, look at Volume 1 of Batwoman. The way he incorporates the art into the frame themselves. It makes a lot of sense, maybe play around with angles and shapes and that sort of thing. I mean maybe this falls into the danger of being a little too soap opera with just the faces and that sort of thing, so if he (Sawyer) disagrees with someone how would he actually be standing how would he hold himself? Body stance is really important. It can be very taking heads so really play around with where everyone is in relation to everyone else. So play around with the negative space as well. And maybe put a little less on a page. This is awesome, but once its all coloured it can get lost and be a bit busy. The next stage would be taking the profiles and how good you guys have that down and then maybe putting it into a connective sense. Maybe watch some John Woo films or Matrix get an idea for form in combat, but this is awesome. Yeah work on doing a really big splash double page. Like if he’s just headbutted him and he’s flying across the room, just straight across. You guys look like you’re getting it down. I saw your stuff last time and its coming along.
