Researching the map: Red Dead Redemption

The world of Red Dead Redemption is so vast and full of stories and history. Each area will have stories and characters you can interact with, this makes the land hugely entertaining and gives it a character of its own. This is something I would like to capture in my world, making every piece of land historic in some way, and make it be the way it is for a well though out reason. The land changes throughout the map, from civilised cities, to desert plains, to farm land, to forests, to snowy mountains to deep canyons. This keeps the map from every getting boring as its constantly changing. These landscapes may often be very different, but they all have a very beautiful, very American atmosphere to them.
