In the recent remake of the classic western ‘True Grit’ an old western town is brought back to life, I find towns like these more appealing than any modern city, the contain a certain history, beauty, essence and mystery you don’t get anymore, western ghost towns still exist, such as Bodie. This must have helped in recreating this town.

Dan Hennah

The sets in The Lord of the Rings is particularly astonishing simply because all three movies are set in a different world, and the look like it, but they are all filmed in this one, mostly New Zealand. The set decorator here has been extremely creative in bringing middle earth to life.

This set design has the feel of a vampire strip club, an outlandish, absurd, degrading, sexual, horror show, fitting as it is the set for the Rocky Horror Picture show. I think a set designer has succeeded when you can feel the link with the story on show, this, as it should, works with the show and helps to take you away into a world you are not used to.

This has a very dark and vampiric atmosphere whilst also maintaining a rich and classical feel. It has the feel of a derelict mansion, something that was once loved but has been long since abandoned. It also has a very retro feel, something you may expect from a Tim Burton movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean displayed some beautiful set pieces, especially  in the old pirate ships such as the black pearl, in personal opinion old ships are wonderful  pieces of art but the design of this ghost ship gave the film its horror element and tension, simply the film would not have been the same without it.

John Hillcoat

Using the world of Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption, John Hillcoat brings this thirty minute film involving the main story arcs of the video game. This film uses many cut scenes from the game making it a pointless animation to whoever has played it, although if videogames don’t float your boat, then this is certainly worth watching.
